There once was a shepherd who lived on his own,

He guarded his sheep, and they kept to the trail,

Fa molt de temps, hi havia un pastor que vivia sol,

lluny, en els turons, en una cabana feta de pedra.

Guardava la seua ovella i mantenien el rastre.

I, així, ell se n’alegrava i el gos movia la cua.

In spring-time he watched how the lambs in their play

All kicked up their hooves then darted away.

The dog fetched them back if they strayed to the dale,

So the shepherd whistled gaily and the dog wagged his tail.

Durant la primavera ell veia com tots els anyells, en el seu joc,

movien les potes i, aleshores, eixien corrent.

Però el gos les feia tornar, si s’allunyaven de la vall.

I, així, el pastor se n’alegrava i el gos movia la cua.

In winter he sheltered away from the cold

With his dog by the fire, while the flock in the fold

Lay safe from the blustering, buffeting gale,

So the shepherd whistled gaily while the dog wagged his tail.

En hivern ell es posava a recer, lluny del fred,

amb el seu gos junt al foc, i amb el ramat plegat,

per a posar-se sa i estalvi dels colps dels vents forts.

I, així, el pastor se n’alegrava i el gos movia la cua.
