Librarian shares her love of books with a bike-powered mobile library

In 2013, school librarian Alicia Tapia created Bibliobicicleta, a free, mobile library pulled by bike. Since then, Tapia and Bibliobicicleta have rolled up to San Francisco parks, farmers markets, museums, and beaches to distribute free books and help spread a love of reading.

Bibliobicicleta holds around 100 books, including selections for people of all ages, lifestyles, and interesets. It attracts atttention wherever it goes.

“Of course, kids are a little more brave to just approache the bike,” Tapial told GOOD, “but adults -if they’re not too cool- will stop and see what it’s all about.

En el 2013, una bibliotecària escolar, Alicia Tapia, creà Bibliobicicleta, una biblioteca lliure i mòbil tirada per una bicicleta. D’aleshores ençà, Tapia i Bibliobicicleta s’han presentat en parcs, mercats d’agricultors, museus i platges de San Francisco amb la intenció de distribuir llibres de manera gratuïta i d’ajudar a escampar l’amor per la lectura.

Bibliobicicleta porta, si fa no fa, 100 llibres, fins i tot, per a persones de qualsevol edat, estil de vida i interessos. Atrau l’atenció allà a on va.

“Per descomptat, els xiquets són molt més atrevits a l’hora d’acostar-se a la bici -comenta Tapia a GOOD-, però els adults (si no són massa freds) es paren un moment a vore de què va tot això”.

 

Pulling Bibliobicicleta up and down the hills of San Francisco is no easy task. It’s hard work going up hills and unsafe coming down them. Tapia recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to by an electric bicycle tot help navigate the city streets and expand the range of Bibliobibciclteta. With three days to go, she has raised $1,500 of her $1,100 goal.

Portar la bicicleta amunt i avall, pels turons de San Francisco, no és una tasca fàcil. És dur treballar pujar cims i insegur baixar-los. Tapia, recentment, llançà una campanya, Kickstarter, per a recaptar fons per a la compra d’una bicicleta elèctrica que li permetera navegar pels carrers de la ciutat i donar a conèixer la finalitat de Bibliobicicleta. Als tres dies d’haver-la iniciada, ja n’havia recaptat 1500$… ¡en lloc dels 1100! que s’havia marcat com a objectiu.

The future of the working week

 (…) The city council in the Swedish city of Gothenburg has trialled a programme of six-hour working days, hoping the move could create a healthier and happier workforce. In Japan -where a culture of overwork is particularly ingrained- the government is considering making it a legal requirement for workers to take more days of paid holiday each year.

En el Japó, on hi ha una cultura del treball dur i durant molt de temps que està molt arrelada, el govern està estudiant la possibilitat de crear un requisit legal per a que els treballadors es prenguen més dies de vacances pagades a l’any.

 

And in the UK,  a YouGov survey last year found that 57 percent of workers would support a four-day week, something championed by the New Economics Foundation. It says a “normal” 40-hour week is neither natural nor inevitable and insists a shorter, more flexible working week would be good for people, the environment and the economy too. (…)

I, fins i tot, en el Regne Unit, un estudi realitzat l’any passat per YouGov tragué que el 57% dels treballadors donaria suport a una setmana laboral de quatre dies. També afig l’informe que la jornada “normal” de 40 hores ni és natural, ni inevitable i insistix en un fet: una setmana laboral més curta i més flexible seria bo tant per a la gent, com per al medi ambient, com per a l’economia.
